Job Description

Position Overview

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is a front-line responder who provides immediate care to patients in emergency medical situations.
The EMT is responsible for assessing a patient’s condition, administering appropriate medical interventions, and ensuring safe transportation to healthcare facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient Assessment: Conduct rapid and thorough assessments of patients’ conditions at emergency scenes.
  • Medical Intervention: Provide basic life support (BLS) measures, including CPR, artificial ventilation, bleeding control and stabilization of fractures and be able to assist on ALS calls.
  • Transport: Safely transport patients to medical facilities, ensuring continuous monitoring and care during transit.
  • Documentation: Accurately document patient condition, treatment provided, and response to treatment for medical or legal purposes.
  • Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with patients, family members, and healthcare professionals.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure all medical equipment and supplies are clean, functional, and stocked.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other emergency responders, hospital staff, and law enforcement to coordinate care and ensure patient safety.
  • Public Education: Participate in community outreach programs to educate the public on emergency preparedness and safety measures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an approved EMT training program.
  • Certification as an EMT-Basic (EMT-B) by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
  • State licensed through ND Health and Human Service.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Clean background check.

Personal Requirements

  • Strong physical stamina and the ability to lift and carry heavy loads.
  • Must display evidence of good health and visual accuracy (utilize corrective lenses when needed).
  • Must demonstrate emotional stability, psychological adaptability, and tact in dealing with a variety of patients, other entities and families as well as co-workers.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must maintain a good driving record.
  • Ability to remain calm and make quick decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • You must comply with scheduled hours and standby time.

Operational Expectations

  • Respond to emergency calls to provide efficient care to all patients.
  • Keep all life support vehicles, to include back up units, in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Must inspect and restock/refill vehicle, equipment, and supplies to maintain overall readiness at the first available opportunity.
  • Perform patient assessment and care at the scene and continue to the appropriate healthcare facility. This includes treatment of medical and trauma patients as indicated by the standard of care at your level of certification, while operating within the current company standing orders.
  • Establish and maintain communications to the physician from the scene and while transporting to the receiving facility when applicable.
  • Perform pre-hospital care according to standing orders, and/or physician orders and according to requirements of the Medical Director.
  • Use appropriate radio procedures in compliance with company and dispatch.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and document all care rendered.
  • Complete all patient care reports immediately after or within a reasonable time frame after the call occurred. Should not exceed past the same shift.
  • Distribute patient data as required to appropriate personnel at the receiving facility in accordance with HIPAA law.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies at the suggested level as described in the unit rig check sheets.
  • Contact your shift Captain, Lieutenant, or Deputy Chief with concerns or situations beyond your control.
  • Monitor vehicle condition and ensure fluid levels are kept within acceptable levels as designated by gauges. Must be checked as part of your rig check daily. Fuel level must be above ¾ tank when practical. Rigs must be fueled before turning over to the next shift.

Training & Education

  • Maintain skill level designated by Metro Area Ambulance through in-service and refresher courses. Quarterly skills are mandatory as are monthly run reviews.
  • Transport by life support units and perform medical evaluations and treatments within the scope of practice and protocol. This includes but is not limited to patient care enhanced skill modules as certified by the ND Health and Human Services and medical direction. This will be done yearly. Anyone who is expired will not be eligible to work.
  • CPR, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS and EVOC are required courses and must be up to date every two years per Employee education policy. Anyone who is expired will not be eligible to work.
  • Must remain knowledgeable with ALS procedures and current Standing Orders so you can effectively assist in all patient care.
  • Responsible for reading meeting minutes, departmental communications, and memos posted on the bulletin board at the South station and on Team discussion.
  • Comply with all Metro Area Ambulance policies and procedures.

Professional Conduct

  • Maintain good rapport with the public and safety officials.
  • Comply with all fire and safety regulations.
  • Be familiar with disaster procedures.
  • Responsible for keeping vehicles, sleeping quarters, garage, and all areas of the base stations clean and in an orderly condition.
  • Maintain uniforms to keep a clean professional appearance. If you have a uniform component that is soiled or unserviceable it is your responsibility to make a uniform request on Aladtec under uniform request.
  • Responsible for filling out timecard with each shift worked and totaling hours, and turning it in on time.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere and behave in a manner that encourages a team environment. This includes MAAS employees, Police, Fire, Dispatch personnel, patients, families, public, and healthcare personnel.
  • Function as an EMT preceptor in accordance with the Ride Along Policy.
  • Work to ensure a positive company image through your actions and words inside and outside of work.

Standards

Physical Fitness

Given the physical demands of the job, EMTs are expected to maintain a high level of physical fitness.
Physical fitness assessments will be conducted yearly to ensure EMTs can perform their duties safely and effectively.

Patient Privacy

EMTs must always protect patient privacy and confidentiality, in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and other relevant privacy laws.

Teamwork

Effective teamwork is crucial in emergency medical services. EMTs are expected to collaborate with other team members, share information promptly, and contribute to a positive work environment.

Response Time

EMTs must adhere to response time standards. Punctuality and reliability are critical to meeting these response time expectations.

Incident Reporting

EMTs are responsible for reporting incidents, accidents, or near-misses, notifying Captain, Lieutenant or Deputy Chief, and participating in investigations.

Compliance

EMTs must comply with all Metro Area Ambulance policies, procedures, and protocols.
Non-compliance may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
